Assistant Commissary-General Alexander Trotter1

Assistant Commissary-General Alexander Trotter was born circa 1792 (calculated from his age at death.) He married Jacqueline Elizabeth Otter in 1836 in St. James', Piccadilly, London.2,3 Assistant Commissary-General Alexander Trotter was promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissary-General on 14 November 1838.4 In 1846 he was serving at Dominica, West Indies, his entry in the Army List indicates that he had served in the Peninsula or the South of France.5 In 1847 or 1848 he made an appeal for the award of the General Service Medal, but his appeal was rejected.6 He died on 26 January 1852 in Dominica.7 He was buried in the Military Burial Ground, Morne Bruce, Dominica.
An estate called CHASE FARM originated in a sale allotment of 279 a. on the west of Tidenham Chase which was bought by James Nerot at inclosure in 1815; he sold it in 1818 to Alexander Trotter. The estate was heavily mortgaged and the interest was in arrears by 1842 when Henry Churchyard acquired the rights of the other mortgagees, and in the next year he bought the fee simple from Henry Trotter, Alexander's trustee.8

"Mr. Henry Trotter had a long and useful career under the Crown in various parts of the Empire. He started in 1852 as private secretary to the Governor of Dominica, in which island he also held an appointment in the Treasury. In 1859 he received a clerkship in the office of the Commander-in-Chief (the Duke of Cambridge) at the Horse Guards. Five years later he was appointed Deputy-Comptroller of the Convict Establishment in Bermuda, and soon after became Acting Comptroller, continuing in charge of that prison until its dissolution. He was next appointed Inspector of Post Offices, Ceylon, and after acting on several occasions as Postmaster General of that colony was in 1871 appointed the first Postmaster-General of the Straits Settlements. In 1832 he became Auditor-General of the latter colony, and subsequently acted as Resident Councillor of Penang. He was employed on missions to Paris, Siam and Java.
