Helen M. Sykes McLean, 90, died peacefully at Evergreen Rehabilitation Unit in Stafford on Wednesday (August 11, 2004). She was a long time resident of Portland before moving recently to Stafford Springs. She was born in Royalton, VT, daughter of Cora Blanche Sewall and Robert Roy Sykes. She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Middletown. She had worked for the Connecticut State Library in Hartford for 10 years and retired from the Anderson Oil Company, in Portland after 26 yean of service as Office Manager and Secretary of the corporation. For many years, Helen was an active member of the Altrusa Society Service Club, the Hemlock Grange of Portland, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Later she joined the Portland Senior Center Thursday Club. She was an avid knitter and made hundreds of hats for newborns, mittens and hat sets for children, and sweater vests for residents of the Rocky Hill Veteran's Home. Helen was predeceased by her infant daughter, Mary Rose; her sister, Norma Frances Sykes Dahlquist; and her brother, Ralph E. Skyes.4
