     Mary Isabella Smith was born on 14 January 1802 in London.1 She was the daughter of Dr. Thomas Smith. Mary Isabella Smith was baptised on 10 August 1802 at St Marylebone Parish Church, London.1 She married Sheriff William Smith Sewell, son of Chief Justice Jonathan/3 Sewell and Henrietta Smith, on 14 January 1827 in Paddington Church, London, the service was conducted by Rev. John Percival, Minister of Oxford Chapel.2 Mary Isabella Smith died on 16 January 1842 in Québec at the age of 40 The Gentleman's Magazine Sept. 1842, p. 332 records "in giving birth to twins, M.J. Sewell, wife of Wm. J. Sewell, esq. Sheriff of Canada." Her memorial inscription on her father-in-law's grave says she died on 14 January 18423,4,5 and is buried on 19 January 1842 in Québec.4 She was re-interred on 26 October 1868 in Mount Hermon Cemetery, W23, Sillery, Québec.5

Maxwell Baldwin Smith1

     Maxwell Baldwin Smith was born on 9 May 1881 in New Orleans, Louisiana.2,1,3 He was the son of Alexander Smith and Elizabeth Phoebe Sewall.1 Maxwell Baldwin Smith is recorded as Max Smith in the census of 1900 which also gives his employment as bank clerk.2 He died on 17 January 1935 in Johnson Street, Monmouth Beach, New Jersey, at the age of 53.3

Maxwell B. Smith, former Mayor of Monmouth Beach from 1924 to 1927, and a retired Wall Street broker, died yesterday of arterial sclerosis at his home in Johnson Street here after a three-year illness. He was 52 years old. Born in New Orleans, he was the son of the late Alexander Smith and the late Mrs. Elizabeth Sewall Smith Rogers, who married a second time after her first husband's death. Mr. Smith was descended through his mother from Samuel Sewall, noted Colonial jurist, who was Chief Justice of the Superior Court in Massachusetts from 1718 to 1728. Mr. Smith's maternal grandfather was Rufus King Sewall, historian of Maine. Port Sewall, Fla., visited by Mr. Smith for many years in the Winter, was named for the Sewall family. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Carolyn Saul Smith; three sons, Merrill S. Smith of Eatontown, N. J. and Maxwell B. Smith Jr. and Kenneth S. Smith, both of Monmouth Beach; two daughters, the Misses Carolyn M. and Madeline Smith, both of Monmouth Beach; and two sisters, Mrs. Reginald W. Pressprich, wife of a New York banker, and Mrs. Edward H. Rogers, wife of a New York physician.4

Born October 30, 1902, in Methuen, Mass., he was the son of Perley D. '95 and Annie Sewall Smith and the grandson of Isaiah Perley Smith '58, and prepared at. Methuen High School. After graduation from Bowdoin he attended Boston University School of Law for three years, receiving an LL.B degree in 1927. He was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar that year and for a year was an assistant professor at the University of South Dakota School of Law. From 1928 until his death he was a lawyer in Boston and Marblehead, where he made his home. He is survived by his wife, Helen Perkins Smith; by two daughters, Susan S. and Pamela D; by a sister, Miss Eleanor Smith of Chicago, Ill; and by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Perley D. Smith of Boston. Bowdoin Alumni Magazine.

Philip Durnford Pemberton Smith

     Philip Durnford Pemberton Smith was born on 17 February 1912 in Westmount, Quebec.1 He was the son of Pemberton Smith and Muriel Gwendoline Durnford.2 Philip Durnford Pemberton Smith married Hilda Eleanor Cotton, daughter of Charles MacKay Cotton and Harriet Serena Hill.2 Smith died on 23 January 1995 at the age of 82.3

Prof. Smith was educated at McGill University (B.Sc. honors, 1934 and M.Sc., 1936). In 1938 he joined the Eastern division transmission engineering department of the Bell Telephone Co. in Montreal, and in 1942 joined the radio branch (microwave) of the National Research Council in Ottawa as an associate research engineer. In 1946 he was convicted of conspiracy to pass information to the USSR and sentenced to five years inprisonment. After spending three years as physicist and director for Vector Labs Inc. in Montreal, and several years teaching physics and mathematics in that city, he came to Memorial as an assistant professor in 1962 and retired in 1977.3
