Dr. F. L. Sewall Family

Dr. Francis Lewis Sewall (d. Sept. 21, 1921, Craft, Tex.) moved to the Craft community south of Jacksonville from New Waverly, Tex., in 1900. He was a horse-and-buggy days doctor and was active in the medical profession several years. He was a third generation physician, having followed his father and grandfather in the profession. They practiced in England and Alabama.
Dr. Sewall’s grandfather, Lewis, came to the United States as a young man after obtaining his education in England. The Sewalls came from England in the Ark of Avalon and The Dove. They landed at Bell’s Landing, Ala., late in the 1700’s.
Dr. Sewall moved his family to Craft in 1900 and built a home there. His standing as a physician and citizen was very high. He was a Mason and member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was buried with Masonic honors. Dr. Sewall was educated in Alabama.
Dr. Sewall m. Alice Marshall Finch and they had (1) George, a carpenter, m. Viola Causey, and they had Watson, Wales, Marshall and Glenn; (2) Frank Singleton, teacher and swimming pool operator, m. Bessie Smith, had Frank Luther, Nell; (3) Robert Lewis, carpenter and farmer, m. Lula Mae Dial, had Elbert Beiton, Mary Alice, Gem Louise Sewall Rowan, Robert Jackson, John Francis, Edward Preston (d. in World War II). Lila Lee-Sewall Cooper; (4) James Krouse, teacher in his early years and then a farmer, m. Trannie McKnight, had William Alexander, James Aaron, Mabel Jewell Sewall Owens, Francis Lewis, Alice Sewall Anderson, Robert Irwin, Ellen Sewall Belk, Ann Sewall Cone, Charles Edwin; (5) Edna May, m. Clarence Jones, had Richard Rudolph, Elizabeth Marshall, Lewis, Ella Katherine Jones Johnston, Paul Francis, and Janie Pauline (latter two were twins); (6)Will, d. young.
After the death of his wife. Dr. Sewall moved to Waverly, Tex., with his children. He m. Janie Gillespie Thompson, a teacher, in 1891. They had (1) Mary Elizabeth, a teacher, m. Harvey McCollum, had Lawrence Dow, Janie Frances (deceased) m. C. A. Allen, then m. Cecil Garrison; (2) Ella Wales, a teacher, m. Edgar Johnston, had Julia Marie, Charles Francis, Sara Scott Johnston Brockette, Eileen Johnston Johnson; (3) Jennings Bryan, spent his years in the U. S. Navy, m. Trudie Powel, had Jennings Bryan Jr., Emily Maude Sewall Jackson; (4) Edwin Ely, in the appliance business, m. Helen Maxine Bryant, had William Bryant, Edwin Thompson, John Bruton, Elizabeth Ann Sewall Campbell. — Ellen Belk and Jack Sewall, grandchildren.⁶

Garden City, S.C. - Kenneth Albert Sewall Sr., 86, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, at National Health Care.
Born in Newmarket, N.H., he was a son of the late Frank and Marylyn Sewall. Mr. Sewall was raised on the "Great Spring Farm" of Newmarket. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a Freemason in Newmarket. He was with the Civil War Round Table of New Hampshire and was a member of Hooksett Congregational Church, where he was in the choir and served as a deacon. Mr. Sewall was an avid golfer.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Sewall of Garden City; a son, Ken Sewall (Michele) of Atlanta; daughters, Marilyn Novack of Fredericksburg, Va., and Lori Roukey (Tim) of Henniker, N.H; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.⁶

Frank L. Sewall, member of the noted shipping family of Bath, Maine, and an employe of Williams, Dimond & Co., San Francisco steamship operators, for several years a quarter of a century ago, died Wednesday night at his home in Los Angeles, according to a dispatch received yesterday. Sewall was a brother of the late Oscar T. Sewall, one time member of the local shipping firm, and in 1907 married Miss Julia Griffin, St. Paul heiress, at San Bernardino. Lately he had been an orange grower at Redlands.⁷

OCEAN SPRINGS - Frank Middleton Sewall, 82, of Ocean Springs, formerly of Clarksdale, died of heart failure
Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, in Ocean Springs.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday at the Old Kosciusko Cemetery in Kosciusko. Bradford-O'Keefe
Funeral Home of Ocean Springs is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Sewall, a retired farmer and agribusinessman, was born in Moline, III., but moved to Coahoma County at
an early age. He attended Clarksdale public schools, graduating in 1937. He was a 1942 graduate of
Mississippi State University with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture administration. He was a member
of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He joined the Navy in 1942 and was commissioned in February 1943 after
graduating from Naval Aviation School in Pensacola, Fla. He was assigned to the Torpedo Squadron Eight and
served aboard the USS Intrepid and the USS Bunker Hill. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air
Medal with eight stars, a Presidential Unit Citation with one star, the Philippine Liberation Medal with one star, a
European Theater Ribbon, and the Pacific Theater Ribbon with seven battle stars.
Mr. Sewall later farmed in Coahoma County for 13 years and entered the farm-equipment business. He later
retired as district sales manager for FMC Corp. After retirement, he worked for the Biloxi Boys and Girls Club
as a woodworking instructor for 12 years.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Betty Hammond Sewall of Ocean Springs; three children, Frankie
S. Rye and Harry Baird Sewall, both of Ocean Springs, and Vicke S. Johnson of Woolmarket; four
grandchildren, Karen Rye of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Stephen Rye of Fayette, Ala., Amanda Johnson of Woolmarket
and Mary Virginia "Ginny" Sewall of Ocean Springs; and two great-grandsons, Austin Tyler Rye and Cody
Anderson, both of Fayette, Ala. Clarkesdale Press Register, 19 August 2002.

Frank Sewall graduated from Bowdoin College, A.B., 1858, A.M., 1861; continued his studies in the universities of Tubingen and Berlin, Germany, and attended lectures at the Sorbonne, Paris, France, 1861-66. He was ordained to the New-Church (Swedenborgian) ministry, 1863; was pastor at Glendale, Ohio, 1863-64, and was President of Urbana University, Ohio, 1870-86, was pastor at Glasgow, Scotland, 1886-88, and in Washington, D.C., from 1890 when he became pastor of the Church of the New Jerusalem where he served for 25 years. He received the honorary degree of D.D. from Bowdoin, 1902.
