Dr. Francis Lewis Sewall was born on 13 November 1812 in Washington County, Alabama.3 He was the son of Lewis Sewall and Elizabeth Howard Wailes.1 Dr. Francis Lewis Sewall is probably the man who was appointed on 4 July 1836, assistant surgeon in the army.4 He married firstly Sarah Angelica (Ann) Singleton, daughter of Col. Robert John Singleton, on 6 December 1838 at Clarke County, Alabama.5 Dr. Francis Lewis Sewall married secondly Ann Amelia DuBose on 20 July 1858 at Clarke County, Alabama, "The parties being of lawful age license was issued on the 19 day of July, AD 1858. I certify that on the 20th day of July, 1858, I solemnized the Rites of Matrimony between the above named parties. Henry Unguhart."6,7 Dr. Francis Lewis Sewall and Ann Amelia DuBose appear on the census of 1860 at Clarke County, Alabama, Doctor Sewall owned about eight slaves at this time. Dr. Francis Lewis Sewall died on 28 February 1885 near Jackson, Clarke County, Alabama, at the age of 72.8

Dr. Francis Lewis Sewall was born on 8 August 1850 in Alabama.1,2 He was the son of Dr. Francis Lewis Sewall and Sarah Angelica (Ann) Singleton.1 Frank Sewall appears to live with Dr. Farquahard Campbell and his family because he is listed at their address in both the 1860 and 1870 Census.2 Dr. Francis Lewis Sewall married firstly Alice Marshall Finch on 2 August 1875 in Monroe, Alabama.3 Dr. Francis Lewis Sewall married secondly Janie Gillispie Thompson, daughter of Andrew Jackson Thompson and Mary Anna Gillispie, on 31 December 1891 in Walker, Texas.4 Dr. Francis Lewis Sewall and Janie Gillispie Thompson appear on the census of 1900 at Walker, Texas.5 Dr. Francis Lewis Sewall died on 21 September 1921 in Craft, Texas, at the age of 716 and is buried in Providence Cemetery, Dialville, Cherokee County, Texas.7

Dr. Francis Lewis Sewall (d. Sept. 21, 1921, Craft, Tex.) moved to the Craft community south of Jacksonville from New Waverly, Tex., in 1900. He was a horse-and-buggy days doctor and was active in the medical profession several years. He was a third generation physician, having followed his father and grandfather in the profession. They practiced in England and Alabama.
Dr. Sewall’s grandfather, Lewis, came to the United States as a young man after obtaining his education in England. The Sewalls came from England in the Ark of Avalon and The Dove. They landed at Bell’s Landing, Ala., late in the 1700’s.
Dr. Sewall moved his family to Craft in 1900 and built a home there. His standing as a physician and citizen was very high. He was a Mason and member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was buried with Masonic honors. Dr. Sewall was educated in Alabama.

Trudie Powel, had Jennings Bryan Jr., Emily Maude Sewall Jackson; (4) Edwin Ely, in the appliance business, m. Helen Maxine Bryant, had William Bryant, Edwin Thompson, John Bruton, Elizabeth Ann Sewall Campbell. — Ellen Belk and Jack Sewall, grandchildren.6

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Sewall of Garden City; a son, Ken Sewall (Michele) of Atlanta; daughters, Marilyn Novack of Fredericksburg, Va., and Lori Roukey (Tim) of Henniker, N.H; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.6

He was a bombardier on a Flying Fortress.3 Frank Luther Sewall died on 26 September 1982 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, at the age of 641,4 and is buried in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.5

Mr. Sewall, a retired farmer and agribusinessman, was born in Moline, III., but moved to Coahoma County at
an early age. He attended Clarksdale public schools, graduating in 1937. He was a 1942 graduate of
Mississippi State University with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture administration. He was a member
of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He joined the Navy in 1942 and was commissioned in February 1943 after
graduating from Naval Aviation School in Pensacola, Fla. He was assigned to the Torpedo Squadron Eight and
served aboard the USS Intrepid and the USS Bunker Hill. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air
Medal with eight stars, a Presidential Unit Citation with one star, the Philippine Liberation Medal with one star, a
European Theater Ribbon, and the Pacific Theater Ribbon with seven battle stars.
Mr. Sewall later farmed in Coahoma County for 13 years and entered the farm-equipment business. He later
retired as district sales manager for FMC Corp. After retirement, he worked for the Biloxi Boys and Girls Club
as a woodworking instructor for 12 years.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Betty Hammond Sewall of Ocean Springs; three children, Frankie
S. Rye and Harry Baird Sewall, both of Ocean Springs, and Vicke S. Johnson of Woolmarket; four
grandchildren, Karen Rye of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Stephen Rye of Fayette, Ala., Amanda Johnson of Woolmarket
and Mary Virginia "Ginny" Sewall of Ocean Springs; and two great-grandsons, Austin Tyler Rye and Cody

Dr. Franklin Sewall married Thedia Redelia Gilchrist, daughter of William Wallace Gilchrist and Redella Ann Cox, on 28 October 1869 in Port Richmond, Staten Island, the service was conducted by the Rev. Chauncy Giles.3 Rev. Dr. Franklin Sewall made a will on 29 October 1915 leaving a life interest in his estate to his wife and on her death to be divided between his two unmarried daughters.4 He died on 7 December 1915 at 1618 Riggs Place, Washington, District of Columbia, at the age of 78 at 7.30 in the morning after an illness of six months.5 His funeral took place on 9 December 1915 at the Church of the New Jerusalem, Washington, District of Columbia, and he is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Bath, Sagadahoc County, Maine.5,6

He received the honorary degree of D.D. from Bowdoin, 1902. He is the author of: The Christian Hymnal (1867); Moody Mike (1869); Angelo, the Circles Boy (1874); The Pillow of Stones (1876); The Hem of his Garment (1876); The Latin Speaker (1878); The New Metaphysics (1888); The Ethics of Service (1889); Dante and Swedenborg and other Essays in the New Renaissance (1893); The Angel of the State (1896); Introduction and Notes to Translation of Kant's Dreams of a Spirit Seer (1900), and Swedenborg and Modern Idealism (1902): and translated: Swedenborg's "The Soul or Rational Psychology" (1886), with introduction and appendix; "The Poems of Giosue Carducci, with Essays on the Hellenic Revival in Italy" (1892), and "The Trophies," sonnets of J. Holsinger, daughter of Conrad Holsinger, on 23 November 1873 in Jefferson County, Wisconsin.4 Franklin Parsons Sewall died on 20 May 1933 in Wisconsin at the age of 843 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.5
