William Sewall Putnam1

     William Sewall Putnam was born on 4 November 1861 in Maine.2 He was the son of George William Sewall Putnam and Tryphena J. Remick.1 William Sewall Putnam married Frances L. Fernald, daughter of Andrew P. Fernald and Lucy Jane Grant, in 1887.3 William Sewall Putnam died on 21 August 1926 in Maine at the age of 644 and is buried in First Parish Cemetery, York, Maine.4

He was educated in the district schools near his home and the New Hampton Literary Institute, New Hampshire, and was at first a clerk for Leighton & Son, of Portsmouth, in whose employ he remained two years. For a further two years he was with W. G. Moulton, and then became associated with his father in the passenger and express business, an enterprise which has since been incorporated under the name of the Putnam Express Company, of which Mr. Putnam is treasurer. He opened a cafe in York in 1888, furnishing chiefly ice cream and confectionery. Mr. Putnam was interested in various business enterprises and has taken an active part in encouraging the growth of the town as a summer resort. In company with Mr. F. Varrell he erected a large number of handsome cottages for the accommodation of summer guests. He bought out the general store of Varrell Brothers, and this has been incorporated under the name of the Putnam Grocery Company. He was a Republican in his political affiliations, and was a member of the town committee. He was appointed postmaster at York Harbor in 1897, and has held that position since that time. He was also tax collector of the York Village Corporation. He was a member of St. Aspinquid Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, of York; Lenity Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, of South Berwick ; Bradford Commandery, U. T., Biddeford; Maine Council, R. S. M., Saco; Kora Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., Lewiston ; and of Riverside Lodge and Dirigo Encampment of Kittery, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.2
