He graduated from York High School as valedictorian (1944), graduated magna cum laude from Yale University with a Bachelor of Science degree in botany (1949), and graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a Master of Science degree in horticulture (1953). In 1953, he was employed by United Fruit Company (now known as Chiquita Brand International) in its Division of Tropical Research in La Luna, Honduras, Central America. It was there that he met his wife, Zoila. Mr. Payne's entire professional career was spent as an employee of United Fruit Company and its subsidiaries. This included a total of 10 years in Honduras. 11 years in Salinas, and one year in the Dominican Republic. His responsibilities included agricultural research, financial analysis and planning. He retired in 1985 as Associate Director of Tropical Research. He was a member of the Honorary Fraternity Phi Beta Kappa, and an associate member of the Honorary Scientific Fraternity Sigma Xi.
Mr Payne was a wonderful husband and father, and a true gentleman He will be sorely missed
Survivors: Mr Payne is survived by his wife of 53 yean, Zoila O. Payne of Salinas; their son, Thomas C. Payne of Long Beach, their daughter, Sharilyn R. Payne of Pacific Grove, and a first cousin, Roger A. Putnam of Portland, Maine
Burial: At Mr Payne's request, his ashes will be scattered at sea off Point Lobos State Park.3
