Col. William Smith Livingston1

Col. William Smith Livingston was born on 27 August 1755.2 He was the son of Robert James Livingston and Susanna Smith.1 Col. William Smith Livingston married Catherine Lott, daughter of Abraham Lott, in 1774. They had a large family but only a son Francis and two daughters, married and left issue.2 He was a brave and gallant officer in the Revolution, and from his reckless daring gained the title of "Fighting Bill," was conspicuous in the battle of Long Island, taken prisoner, and confined in the Sugar House, but was soon exchanged.2 Col. William Smith Livingston died on 25 June 1794 at the age of 38.2

He practiced law here and later was associated with railway and industrial enterprises in Ecuador. Between the two World Wars he resided in France and for the last twelve years in Florida.
Surviving are his widow, the former Julia Chapin of New York and three children by his previous marriage to the former Mary Isabel Bonner of New York. They are Benoni Lockwood Jr., Mrs. Alexander D. Knox and Mrs. Kenneth B. Outerbridee. New York Times, 5 August 1952.4
