He resided in Shrewsbury until near the close of the year 1811. He then went to Roxbury and pursued the studies preparatory for admission into college. He remained there most of the time till the end of 1813. In the spring of 1814 he went to Leicester Academy and spent two terms before entering Harvard. After leaving college he went to Hallowell, Maine, and engaged in school keeping. The next spring he took charge of Hampden Academy, where he remained throughout the year. He then began the study of theology under the instruction of Rev. David Thurston at Winthrop, Maine. In the autumn of 1820 he took charge of Hallowell Academy, in which situation he remained for three Years. In 1823, he removed with his family to Farmington, Maine, and was employed as preceptor in the academy in that place, where be continued for seven years. In 1830 he left the academy and opened a classical school in the same town and remained in it six years. In 1836 he left school teaching, purchased a farm and engaged in agricultural pursuits; in 1845 he left Maine and continued these pursuits in Shrewsbury.3
