Fitted for college at the Academy in New Ipswich, New Hampshire. After graduating he studied divinity with Rev. Jonathan French of Andover, Mass. He preached for several years, but was never ordained as a minister over any society, and he resigned the sacred profession much against his will on account of temporary ill health. He then became a devoted and useful teacher. He was for some time Preceptor of an Academy in Marblehead, he then removed to Boston, where he taught in a private school from 1818 to 1821.
In 1825 he entered into partnership with John Baker, under the firm of Baker & Greele, in the business of manufacturing printing types. This firm was dissolved in 1827, and the next year Mr. Greele took into partnership Mr. Henry Willis, and they continued the business under the firm or Greele & Willis until 1832, when Mr. Greele retired from active business. He was a devoted member of various charitable and benevolent institutions. He was an officiating Deacon in the Federal Street Church for nearly fifty years, first under the ministry of Rev. Dr. Channing and subsequently under Rev. Dr. Gannett. His steady and sincere adherence to the Liberal faith through all the fluctuations of time and opinion was remarkable. He was a faithful worker in the American Unitarian Association. He was elected a Representative from Boston to the State Legislature in 1838, 1840, 1841, 1842 and 1843. He was a member of the Board of Aldermen in Boston in 1834,1835 and 1836.⁸

After serving his apprenticeship as a printer with his father, Green Jr. set up for himself in 1725 From then until 1751 he printed occasionally on his own and sometimes with other printers, including his brother-in-law, John Draper, and John Bushell. Green printed the Boston Gazette from 1725 or 1726 until 1732. The quality of the work done by one firm with which he was associated, that of Bushell, Allen and Green, seems to have been high. Isaiah Thomas, in The history of printing in America, remarked that they used handsome types, and printed on good paper."

In February 1744/45 Green was commissioned second lieutenant in the train of artillery to be sent to Louisbourg, Île Royale (Cape Breton Island), in the expedition commanded by William Pepperrell. According to Green, "a disposition to Serve His Majesty and (my) Native Country put (me) out of good Business," which he could not regain. In 1748 he therefore petitioned the General Court of Massachusetts to take his case under consideration and appoint him doorkeeper of the General Court.

In 1751 Green moved to Halifax, arriving there in September aboard the sloop Endeavor. He proceeded to erect on Grafton St (north of Duke St) the first printing office in what is now Canada, but died sometime in October. He may have issued a prospectus concerning the publication of a newspaper, which was actually initiated by John Bushel as the Halifax Gazette. Green had two sons who were printers, but apparently they never went to Halifax.¹
