Jennie A. (Dimond) Sousa, age 95, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully on April 21, 2021.
Born at the Dimond homestead in Orange, NH on March 7, 1926, the eldest of four children to Walter H. and Alice M. (Eastman) Dimond, Jennie grew up in Orange, graduating from the 8th grade in a one-room schoolhouse. She married James W. Sousa in 1946.
During the war years, Jennie worked as a mica rifter at Smith’s Mica Shop in Canaan Village and later at the Baltic Mill and Pierce’s Nursing Home in Enfield. Her final employment was with Dr. Israel Dinnerman as his secretary.
Jennie was a multi-talented lady who always kept busy. She was an accomplished seamstress and quilter. She was a contributor to the 1976 Bi-Centennial quilt that hangs in the Canaan Town Library. As her family grew and her grandchildren came along, each new member received one of her beautiful quilts.
Jennie was a member of the Canaan Lioness Club and the president of the Tops program. Her other interests were oil painting, walking, gardening, fishing, camping, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and feeding the birds.
Jennie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was especially fond of Country and Irish music.
After she retired, Jennie fulfilled her passion to travel. She went to Alaska, Hawaii, England, Switzerland, Ireland, and 10 cruises on the Southern Caribbean.
In August of 2011, at the Canaan Old Home Days, Jennie renewed her friendship with Phillip Beaton, an old classmate from 70 years prior at the Canaan High School. She and Phillip spent many enjoyable times together before he passed away in January of 2013.
Jennie instilled in her children an attitude of optimism and resourcefulness. She was especially proud of the fact that her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren are multi-talented, and know how to persevere even when times are tough.
She was predeceased by her husband James of 57 years; sons, Gerald Robtoy and Ronald Sousa; three grandsons, Sgt. Gerald Robtoy, Jr. U.S.M.C., Robert Sousa, and Randall Sousa; great-grandson, Trager Prior; brother, Arthur Dimond; and sister, Edna Chase. She is survived by Esther Johnson.
Jennie is also survived by her children, Elaine Prior, Debra Muzzey, and Michael Sousa, many grandchildren, great-, and great-great-grandchildren. Jennie was truly loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed by all.
At Jennie’s request there will be no funeral services. There will be a private gathering for burial in the Dimond family plot, in the Church Cemetery in Orange NH, at a later date, as of yet to be determined.2
