Capt. Johannes Wendell1

M, b. 2 February 1649, d. between 20 November 1691 and 20 February 1692
     Capt. Johannes Wendell was baptised on 2 February 1649 at New Amsterdam in the Reformed Protestant Dutch church.1,2 He was the son of Evert Jansen Wendell and Susanna Du Trieux.3,4 Capt. Johannes Wendell married first Maritie Jellise Meyer, daughter of Jellis Pieterse Meyer and Elsje Hendricks.1 He became a general trader at Albany and was very successful. He grew to be a very wealthy and prominent man. He lived on Yonker straat, now State Street and held many important offices. In 1684 he was magistrate, in 1685 captain in the colonial service, and alderman of Albany in 1686. In 1690 he was empowered with others to treat with the Five Nations and to superintend the work of preparing defences for Albany.2 Capt. Johannes Wendell married secondly Elizabeth Staats, daughter of Abram Staes and Trijntgen Jochemse, in 1677.5,6 Capt. Johannes Wendell died between 20 November 1691 and 20 February 1692.1

He was baptised on 2 May 1703 at Dutch Church, New York City.2,3 He was the son of Abraham Wendell and Katrina de Kay.2 Major John Wendell married firstly Elizabeth Quincy, daughter of Edmund "The Subscriber" Quincy and Dorothy Flynt, on 12 November 1724 (or 10 Nov 1724). Said to have had a total of 15 children.1,4,5,3,6 Major John Wendell died on 15 December 1762 at the age of 59.
