     Jane Toppan is also recorded as Tappen such is the spelling of her name in the list Boston marriages for 1713. She was born on 29 December 1674 also recorded as 28 Sept in the Diary, p. 6.1,2 She was the daughter of Lieut. Jacob Toppan and Hannah Sewall.1 Jane Toppan married secondly Bartholomew Green II, son of Samuel Green and Sarah Clark, on 16 June 1710 at Boston, Massachusetts; the service was carried out by her cousin Samuel Sewall, Jr. J.P.2 Jane Toppan died on 28 January 1732/33 at the age of 58 however Tappan-Toppan gives the date as 3 August 1728.1,3

     John Toppan was born on 23 April 1651 in Newbury, Massachusetts.2 He was the son of Abraham Toppan and Susan Taylor.1 John Toppan married firstly Martha Brown on 3 September 1688.3 John Toppan married secondly Ruth Heard in 1717.3 He was a soldier under Captain Lathrop in the fatal battle with the Indians at Bloody Brook, near Deerfield, Mass., September 18, 1675, and was one of the seven or eight who escaped out of a company of 80 men. "At the battle of Bloody Brook, John Toppan was wounded in the shoulder, concealed himself in a water course that at that time was almost dry, and hauled grass and weeds over his bead so that, though the Indians sometimes stepped over him he was not discovered."2 John Toppan died on 26 December 1723 at the age of 72.2
