M, b. 11 December 1802, d. 20 June 1842
Rufus Sewall was born on 11 December 1802 in Hallowell, Maine, (though the M.I. in Oakland Cemetery gives the following year.)2 He was the son of David Sewall and Hannah Barrell.1 Rufus Sewall married Frances Elizabeth Farrell on 6 September 1827 in Hallowell, Maine.3 Rufus Sewall died on 20 June 1842 in Shreveport, Louisiana, at the age of 39.
There are various versions of his death. The Times-Picayune reports: Fatal Affrays at Shreveport. - On the evening of the 20th instant Rufus Sewell, of the firm of Robinson & Sewell, of Shreveport, in this state, was killed in an affray that took place in that town. It appears that in the early part of the day blows were exchanged between Charles Sewell, the brother of the deceased, and Dr. Hardwick ; that in the evening the deceased and his partner, Robinson, met Dr. Hardwick and one Hartsborough ut the tavern, when Sewell was knocked down, and while down a cut was inflicted with a bowie knife in his abdomen, of which he instantly died. The Natchitoches Herald of the 25th instant mentions another affray which took place a short time previous to the above at Shreveport, in which Charles A. Sewell, a brother of Rufus, was wounded and a man named Matthew Edwards killed. One Boyle in the first place attacked Sewell in a grocery with abusive language and on the letter coming out fired a pistol at him, wounding him in the leg. Edwards took Boyle's part, but on the arrival of police officers fled. He was shot, however, in endeavoring to make his escape, but Boyle was arrested. Fine times, truly, at Shreveport.4,5 He was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana.6

Rev. Rufus King Sewall

Rev. Rufus King Sewall was born on 22 January 1814 in Edgecomb, Maine.1,2 He was the son of Rufus K. Sewall and Phoebe Merrill.3 Rev. Rufus King Sewall married firstly Anne Elizabeth Whitehurst on 21 November 1843 in Salem, Massachusetts, the marriage intentions having been published Burlington 29th October 1843.4,5 Rev. Rufus King Sewall married secondly Mary B. McLean, daughter of Robert McLean, on 10 September 1856.1 Rev. Rufus King Sewall died on 17 April 1903 in Wiscasset, Maine, at the age of 89.7

He was prepared for College at Gardener Lyceum and at the Academy at Farmington. After graduation in 1837 from Bowdoin he studied theology at Bangor Seminary. He was acting pastor of the Third Congregationalist Church at St. Johnsbury, Vermont in 1841 and 1842 and subsequently preached as a supply at East Cambridge, at Burlington, and at Plymouth, Massachusetts. At the last place he was urged, as he had been in Vermont, to become the settled pastor. His health, however, forbade, and in 1846 he removed to St Augustine, Florida, where he resided at five years, conducting the services in the Presbyterian church as far as he was able, and giving private instruction to members of the family of General Worth, commandant of the United States military post. Returning north he settled in 1851 in Wiscasset, which continued to be his legal residents till his death. The uncertainty of his health, and demands on his time in caring for his wife's property in the South, led him to withdraw entirely from the Ministry and to study law with his kinsman, Kiah B. Sewall (Bowdoin, 1829), at Mobile, Alabama. He practiced his profession in the United States Circuit and Supreme Courts for several years. Most of his time, however, was devoted to historical research, and to his publications on the early history of the state. Mention should be made here of his Ancient Dominions of Maine (1859) and his Ancient Voyages to the Western Continent (1895). He was for over 50 years a prominent member of the main historical Society, serving as vice-president, and on its publishing committee and was the founder and president of the Lincoln County historical Society.8
