Caroline J. Sewall died on 19 October 2014 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.3

Caroline Sewall Hanks passed away on Sunday, October 19, 2014 at the age of 90.
She was a member of St. Monica's Episcopal Church in Naples and lived at Waterside Place in North Naples since 1996. She died while staying with her son Christopher and daughter-in law Suzanne at their home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mrs. Hanks' husband, Howard Hanks, Jr. , died in September, 1987.
Mrs. Hanks is survived by her sister, Islay Hedger of Santa Rosa, CA (previously of Naples). She also leaves five children, Christopher, Stephen (Silver Spring, MD), Nancy Kudwa (York, SC), David (Walnut Creek, CA), and Paul (Naples, FL). Mrs. Hanks was the devoted and proud grandmother of eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of whom she happily saw during her final year.
Wherever the family was living - her husband's career in the portland cement industry took the family to many different states over time - Mrs. Hanks was always actively involved in her local community, including serving as a PTA leader and on school boards in New Orleans LA, Newark DE, Wheeling IL, and Woodstock NY. As an indication of her homemaking skills, Mrs. Hanks competed in and won the title of Mrs. Delaware in 1958 in the national Mrs. America contest.
In the 1970s, while living in Walnut Creek CA, she earned a Masters Degree in counseling at California State-Hayward, which led to full-time work as a human-resources manager in the Bay area in the 1980s. After her husband's death, Mrs. Hanks moved to Lake Forest, IL to be near her daughter and, as a volunteer, became the driving force in the establishment of the non-profit, volunteer-based Career Resource Center there, which helps the unemployed find jobs. In her 80's she served multiple years as President of the Waterside Place Homeowners Association and, in her spare time, worked as a seamstress in the costume department at the Naples Players. And finally, despite having a stroke in 2010 in Naples, she finished Caroline, An American Woman's Experience, a book-length memoir of her life that will soon be available in print and online.
