He was the son of John Powell and Ann Dummer.1 He was a prosperous Boston merchant, the holder for three decades before the American revolution of a naval victualing contract.2 John Powell married Jane Grant, daughter of Sueton Grant and Temperance Talmage, on 17 September 1754 in Newport, Rhode Island.3 John Powell died between 26 May 1794 and 22 June 1799 in Ludlow, Shropshire.

John Powell married Isabella Shaw, daughter of General Æneas Shaw, on 8 August 1808.2,1 John Powell died on 3 May 1827 at the age of 50.

Mayor of Toronto, 1838-40, and Registrar of Deeds, Lincoln County.1 He was born on 19 June 1809.2 He was the son of John Powell and Isabella Shaw.1 John Powell married Eleanor Drean, daughter of Henry Drean, on 1 July 1830. John Powell died on 24 February 1881 at the age of 71.2
